History of Wellassa National School

The famous school named Mo\Wellassa Central College is situated at Bibile in the area of Wellassa, Hewelwela. It is celebrated 77th years for 2010

After controlled the historical Wellasse  rebellion only Wellasse could keep low economical, cultural, and social situation. Without teenagers between 14-15 and elders all other people were massacred by white men. Not only that they destroyed fruitful trees. And no suitable educational places for Sinhalese Buddhists students to obtain a successful education. But when started a missionary school at first they could learn reading, writing and communicating.  As this was established at Bibile  area at the place of primary school, during the first half of 20th contrary. The place which that situated   is called "Iskole Godella" even today by the villagers.

But later there were not enough roomy for all students to learn, they need another school as a result of a discussion  of guests in the area this school settled at the present place.

As a pioneer late Mr. C.W. Bibile worked with the help of Buddhist monks village head men and started this school 30.10.1933 as a primary school.

At first this school named as Sinhala mixed school. The villagers introduced as "Nagaha Dorawa Iskole"

That name we can describe like this:

“Via (A5) Badulla-Batticloa road the people transported their goods by caravans to up country at that time. People transported by caravans from Batticaloa area they transported salt by caravans  stored at the place called "Lunugaala"(now called "Lunugala"). The caravans traveled through the school premises hear "Galaoya"(Also named "Galoya") in such a way the caravans traveled across rivers called as "Doruwa" and there was a "Naa" (Iron wood) tree. Near   “Doruwa” any  way  people  at  that  time  named  it as  “Naagaha  Doruwa”  Later  the  school  was  close  by "Nagaha Doruwa" named  “Nagaha  Doruwa  School”.   At  present  we  can  see  even a  bridge  built by  using  only  stones  by  White  men  at  the  way  A5.”

In  this  school  as  "Sinhala  Mixed  School"  the first  principal    named  late  Mr. A.A. Ramanayake. There were only 30 students and S.M. Punchi Banda   was  the  first  student  the first  building at the school   was  a  wattle   and   daub     hut  with  the  size of  60  x  20.  Close   by there  was  a  teacher  quarters, a  kitchen  and  2 toilets  for  teachers  and students.  In every year they  used  cow-dung for  the floor. For that  student brought  cow–dung  from  their houses and essential things for roofs. The school premises was about 5 acres. Many of the land were covered by scrub and ravines which were flourished. As well all the classes were in that building. The agricultural process by students were successful such as vegetables and yams.

They used water from "Galaoya" and fruits from the trees at the school premises during that season. The administrator offered students lunch such as Rotti, Grains, Rice and  Vegetable  and  bread, bans  and  even  milk.

They haven’t free text books and uniform material ; used only slates with slate pencils. But they had discipline, rules and punishments and the compulsory tasks such as cramming.

Late Mr. J.P. Appuhamy donated the land in front of the school. In the year 1942 he donated a tilled building as a permanent one 60' x 20'.
